Villains in Disney musical and animated films always have a way of sweeping through the film catching our attention and making us root for the lead characters of the film or television series. I have loved watching hundreds of Disney films live action and animated over the years as a child and an adult. Villains I have noticed have the best costumes and make up. Every detail is considered and taken into consideration for every viewer watching the film. Cruella along with other female and male characters like “Jafar” from Aladdin, “Scar” from the Lion King, and “Maleficent” from Sleeping Beauty. Every character has a backstory, have special powers, and abilities to transform, change, disappear, crawl, or jump to entice the lead character.
Cruella DeVil the villain from “101 Dalmatians” animated and live action film in the early 1990s she is an iconic villain the many people know. The dog-stealing diva dressed to kill literally and slay the streets. If you watched “Cinderella”, “Aladdin”, “Maleficent”, and “Lion King” you know the backstory of each character where they came from, why they behave the way they do, and their motives to attack their opponents. Every character has a backstory and you need to understand their intentions with everyone else featured in the film.
The live action lead role is going to Emma Stone will be the featured star of “Cruella”. Quirky, Funny, Strong, and the Transformer when Emma acts you don’t see her on the screen she has a way of capturing the essence of each character of every role. Remember her in “Easy A”, “Crazy Stupid Love”, “The Help”, and her Oscar winning role, “La La Land” in 2016 was one I will never forget. She reminds me of a feisty, younger version of Gilda Garbo, a little of Julia Roberts they have that power to tap into the whole embodiment of a character to the environment they come from, their encounters with the other characters, and more. Emma Stone has that ability. You can tell she values comedic roles, values leading lady roles from past films in the 20th century and our current century. Great actresses study the greats and they know how to channel and bring the character to life to the television and film screens.
I anticipate with her voice, diction, and accent coaching of the character’s voice will be one we will remember. She knows how to fulfill that role physically, mentally, and emotionally with the character. Cruella DeVil is an animated character who comes with layers. Manipulation, Fashion sense, brutal, sarcasm, classy, and cruelty to the core. She doesn’t care about the well-being of animals, there is no normal compass with this character. So any actress who gets to have this opportunity to bring their A-Game and make her a reality is a huge opportunity. Glenn Close had the chance to play the older Cruella DeVil and now Emma Stone shows how Cruella became so evil in her younger years.
