Nick's Debut Album artwork from 2002 |
He is an embodiment of relentless determination, focus, drive, and resilience. He has managed to take his career from a kid who started out in a rap group, who participated in a local gang in San Diego, California. He managed to change his life around and keep contributions in the entertainment industry going. Nicholas Scott Cannon proves to everyone he will not let anyone or anything stop in his way. He’s overcome personal, career, relationship, and health struggles. Last year there was controversy for Cannon when a podcast that was posted from his show, “Cannon’s Class” in 2020 when viral around the globe regarding an old interview with hip hop legendary group, “Public Enemy’s”, Richard Griffin aka “Professor Griff” where Cannon made some comments that were seen as Anti-Semitic and offensive to the Jewish community. Cannon’s comments during his interview were not intended to offend any particular social community.
His intentions were really to educate, inform, share information with his viewers. They came out offensive to this community because they saw it as an attack and there appeared to be a lot of miscommunication. He was let go temporarily which came as a shock in the summer of 2020 with Viacom. It was shocking because Cannon has had such a strong relationship with Viacom since he was a teenager at 15. In the end he reflected he realized tainting his image and brand he made for himself would affect his creditability. The time he took to invest in his career, his mentors, family, friends, and fellow entertainers who love him and support him were all affected by that decision. His reputation would be affected in the entertainment industry. It can become an issue at times for entertainers when controversy strikes. The B word I am referring to be blacklisted in the entertainment industry. We have seen many celebrities who lose their audience when they have made offensive, racial, prejudice, sexist, or ageist comments that target a social group and community. You can often become blacklisted in the community. Cannon decided to take the route to educate himself on the Jewish religious community. He wants to show people that minorities and Jews have a commonality.
As a recent college graduate of Howard University he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Criminology with a minor in Africana Studies.
Viacom Networks and Nick Cannon reconciled later in the fall of 2020 and now Cannon has been reinstated with Viacom Networks and their business and personal relationships have remained in tact. Cannon has new projects coming and one is his talk show with Fox Network which will air September 27, 2021 and the season 16 of “Wild N Out” on MTV has been in progress on all MTV network stations. Cannon took those few months to reflect throughout the pandemic and his time away from Viacom. We will see the growth and the change in him on his new talk show with his guests and with other projects that will develop.
Cannon’s goal and objective in the entertainment industry he told Black Enterprise Magazine in an interview last year after his graduation.
“My goal is to be the most powerful person in media. I just want to have a multi-platform empire. Create household legacies”. He has projected quite the legacy for himself and also accomplished a heavy and diverse background as an entertainer, rapper, songwriter since he was fifteen. He has touched every form of media and it becomes gold. He has been featured in both television and films remember he started out on, “All That” on Nickelodeon starring his fellow cast mates Kenan, Kel, Laurie Ann McBeth, Amanda Bynes. All of his former cast mates broke out during the mid 1990s to become household entertainers in the early 2000s and at this present time. I remember staying up on weekends glued to Nickelodeon watching him dress up as all different kinds of characters. Everyone behind the scenes and in front of the camera can all agree. Cannon has charisma, drive, charm, and he’s ok with doing what’s necessary to entertain his guests. He’s also not afraid to host anything at all. “America’s Got Talent”, “Masked Singer”, “Wild N Out”, and has appeared in several films “Drumline”, “Underclassmen”, “Shall we dance”, “Love don’t cost a thing”. I would love to see Cannon appear in a role where we don’t even recognize him at all on screen. He’s such a light and full of positivity in the industry. He cares about the investment of entertaining and educating people. He believes in giving back and you see it displayed.
I would say his “big brother” and mentor, Will Smith who has known Nick since he was a teenager has taken him under his wing.
Cannon has accomplished so much coming up on 26 years in the entertainment industry and he’s just getting started Nick’s talk show airs this fall 2021. Get ready for laughs and great advice.
