Okay Valentine's Day weekend is three weeks away so let's have just acknowledge one of R&B's smoothest crooners this holiday season as it comes upon us before everyone goes on vacation, baecation, or staycation depending where you want to go. For my sports fans let's not forget NBA All-star weekend also falls around that time ladies in case you all want to escape with your person for the holiday too. Now this gentlemen deserves this I wish I had done this a lot earlier but timing is everything. So let's get to it for my 90s R&B fans you will appreciate this....
Ginuwine one of the Kings of R&B in the 1990s I remember listening to his music and seeing all of his videos on BET, MTV, Video Music Box, and all of the cable stations. Elgin ”Ginuwine” Lumpkin, Sr. was discovered in Virginia along with Timbaland, Melissa “Missy da Misdemeanor” Elliot, Magoo, and others were all found in Virginia during the 1990s. You might remember the introduction of his song, “Pony” his debut single came out July 30, 1996.
His debut classic album, “The Bachelor” debuted a week before his birthday (Oct 15th), October 8, 1996.
Ginuwine stole all of the ladies hearts when they saw this video his dance moves, his 6-pack abs, him flipping, flirting with the ladies in his videos, inspiring artists, dancers, commercials, movies, and more with this top 10 hit. This year commemorates 30 years and he so deserves his flowers.
I have been a fan since I was a kid along with my friends and family members who remember his songs as well. I felt like the timing was so perfect with all of these artists celebrating anniversaries he also needed to be added to this list.
He continues to perform solo and also with his group, TGT which collectively is Durrell “Tank” Babbs, Ginuwine, and Tyrese they formed in 2007 thru 2015 the group separated after 8 years. They occasionally link up for performances for major events too.
He has inspired countless artists from Usher, Chris Brown, IMX, Bobby Valentino, NEXT, so many other groups, and even this generation now. I am sure are influenced by him. He continues to inspire them. He himself was influenced by Prince, Michael Jackson, and soulful R&B groups influenced his runs and his passion in his lyrics. You can tell he really took the time to learn how to speak to women in his music.
So King Ginuwine let’s go down memory lane and give you the much needed attention you so deserve. Now after 8 albums, number one albums, collaborations with Missy, Aaliyah, Timbaland, NAS, TGT, Tyrese. Ginuwine was born Elgin Lumpkin, Sr., born October 15, 1970 in Washington, DC. He began his performances with a group called Finesse Five and then later joined a local band called Physical Wonder.
Ginuwine was first discovered by the 1990s R&B multi-platinum group, Jodeci first discovered him. Which makes a lot of sense that they would meet during that time because they were two of the most successful R&B acts during the nineties so it’s not a surprise talent recognizes talent when they see it.
He later officially made his debut with his album and went on to have successful hit after hit in his 30- year career. Ginuwine appeared on “The Barbershop”, “The Best Man”, and “Magic Mike XXL” his music continues to inspire and is used in different forms of media and for that perfect mood.
So to Ginuwine congratulations on 30 years so in honor of your anniversary want R&B fans to listen to both The Bachelor (1996) and his album, Back To the Basics just celebrated it’s 20th anniversary in November was released (11/15/2005). Let’s give him the much needed props he deserves and hope we get to see him on his fellow bandmate, “Tank’s” podcast, “R&B Money” finally he can get a chance to get the much needed flowers he deserves.
