Yara Shahidi spreading her black girl magic to Harvard

I saw this cover and the photos I thought wow she’s come such a long way does anyone remember she was a child actress actually and is on the way to Harvard University. She decided to take a year off for herself to enjoy her job at one of ABC’s most popular family series, “Blackish” where she plays oldest daughter, Zoey Johnson I love the character especially the fact that they are making more young women see themselves. They see themselves in a light where they can empower themselves, feel confident, and are prepared to enter college.  Now her real life is imitating her "artistic life" she will begin the role of going back to college and apply to Ivy-league universities and colleges. It’s pretty incredible.

She inspired me actually when I heard about her decision to make sure first to focus on work and then she would take some time before attending college you could hear the commitment and how much she loves her craft and being an actress. This young lady started out in the film playing Eddie Murphy’s "Imagine That" young daughter in the film , "The First Family", and now she is off to Harvard. It made me realize the sacrifice, the hustle, and time management because for actresses non-union and union meaning that they have and can obtain a SAG card they are on set for about 16-20 hours per shoot. It also depends on the filming of a movie, how long a scene can be captured, produced, and if there may be any takes that have to be replicated and reshot again too. You have to multitask between working for a television show like “Blackish” and also manage your time to study and prepare to enter in college.

I heard about her story it made me inspired she's not only an actress but also is an activist as well. Young women already have surpassed their male counterparts (Sorry boys not trying to disrespect you all but this is about empowerment for girls and teens to go to school and stay in school as well)
When I heard about her entering college and especially one of the Ivys it was huge news to hear.

I loved hearing this story she’s already an incredible talented young lady and to hear that she along with many other African American women are adding more diversity to the campus is a great achievement within itself. This is a big deal and I love Essence magazine. Especially when they give our favorite actresses, singers, and public figures the royal five star treatment for their well known gorgeous covers. I loved the styling and photos were a great way to showcase her in this April edition.
So for all of the young women out there who are preparing to finish their senior year in junior high, high school, undergraduate year, or graduate school this year my hats are all off to you. Whether you are attending a prestigious Ivy League college or even online classes, whichever degree you are obtaining all of these brown, beige faces of all shades my hats are off to you.

Make sure you all watch Blackish before the season ends this spring and check out Yara’s spin-off, Grownish which is on the Freeform Network. For more information on Grownish and Blackish visit http://www.go.abc.com
