Mya, Monica, Brandy, Destiny’s Child, were and are some of my favorite R&B
Divas there were many more but just realized there were so many of them during
1998 who broke out with albums that are still known and are legendary. All of
these women of course still have critical acclaim and are still in their prime,
still making hit music. I remember first seeing Mya on BET Network when she
debuted “All about me” and her debut album, “Mya”. I wanted to start with Mya
first because she has new album coming out on the way April 20th,
2018 Friday her eighth album debuts in stores.
So how did this Baltimore native stay relevant and keep
changing as an artist. 8 albums,
70 Music nominations, 27 she’s won 27 (“Mya”, “Fear of Flying”, “Moodring”, “Liberation”, “Sugar
& Spice”, “KISS”, “Smoove Jones”, and now her upcoming album, “The Knock
Out”). She’s a quadruple threat she can dance, sing, act, write songs. Does
anyone remember her on “Dancing with the stars”, in the movie “Shall we dance”,
and she did a movie called “Love for Sale”. So she’s had a chance to showcase
all of her abilities in the music industry.
I love an entertainer who can do multiple things because you
realize they’re not only capable of marketing themselves just to one thing but
a multitude of things too. You can expand them into different directions.
So I wonder how will this new album and her first single “You
Got Me” is first. So I wonder now that she’s back with new music how will the
music measure up against fellow millennials and R&B divas, Ciara, Keyshia
Cole, Monica, Ashanti, Beyonce, Brandy, and the younger new artists coming out
like SZA, Kehlani, Cassie, and Tinashe? How will her music go up against these
artists and make her stand out. We will see when her new album, “The Knock Out”
debuts this spring.
