I have found a few new television shows this year and last year that are oozing with positivity for black young women within their late 20s,30s, and 40s the Generation X, Y, and Millennial community who are up and coming living in the buzzing cosmopolitan that are set in cities like New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Miami around the country that keep it popping, interesting, fun, full of diversity, culture, and more. Meet two creators who are making really good television where young women of all backgrounds are seeing themselves.
Meet Whitney, Renee, Ella McFair, Sondi, Barb, and Gwen Greene. All of these ladies are characters on the new show, “We Run the World”. Immediately I think of the words “Run the World” and think of Queen Beyonce and her 2011 hit from her fourth album, “4” “Who runs the world (Girls)" album. Ten years later now there is a television comedy featuring 4 Manhattanite females who are all in their early 30s finding and navigating young woman hood in Harlem, New York.
I can completely identify with the show as an early 30 something year old woman who was born in New York, grew up on the east coast, and is literally living in New York City in her thirties I can relate completely with these women.
The everyday struggles that young women go through with adjusting to a new career, relationship changes, trying to find their match for them, finding their personal style, financial struggles, apartment changes, family relationships, balancing friendship, and sisterhood.
I and many young women I know can identify with someone on the show whether if they are African American or any other minority. You can relate to some of the realities we all face. The show is stylish, cool, witty, sexy, fun, and has a cast that is gorgeous, opinionated, great comedic timing.
Meet the cast of “Run the World” Andrea Bordeaux plays writer and journalist, Ella McFair on the show whose career is taking off after the start of her new published book. Bordeaux can be seen and was featured on the following television series and film projects (Pressure, Law and Order, How to Make it in America, Marry Me, Smash, Criminal Minds, Dynasty, and Bones.
Next is Whitney Green the budding bride to be with an independent boss attitude who has a no-nonsense demeanor when it comes to getting her job done and managing her relationship with Ola. She’s a type A diva who is a bit of a perfectionist and has a soft streak when it comes to her girls and friendship bond. Whitney is played by actress, Amber Stevens West you can see Amber in the following television and film projects, “Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift”, “Fired Up”, “22 Jumpstreet”, “Love Jacked” on Netflix, “Grey’s Anatomy”, “God Friended Me”, “The Carmichael Show”, and “CSI”.
The cast would not be complete with this lady who is bringing the humor and the fashion game Bresha Webb’s comedic timing is unbelievable. She plays Renee Ross on the show the petite diva divorcee who plays by her own rules in life, she’s a free-spirit, will tell you the truth, and is absolutely hilarious. No filter matters to this character.
You can see Bresha Webb on many comedy films that are coming out this year in 2021 and in the past. She started out in Martin Lawrence produced show, “Love That Girl”, “Meet the Blacks” with Mike Epps, “Marlon” as a series regular, “Ride Along 2”, “Acrimony”, “Meet the Blacks 2: The House Next Door” in theaters now.,”Last O.G.”, AND “Grey’s Anatomy”.
The next character who is the voice of reason, intelligent, has a mothering quality, but also militant, and sassy is Sondi Hill she’s played by Corbin Reid. Sondi is a professor who is balancing a private love affair with her former professor and developing a relationship with his 6-year-old daughter. Sondi I love because she’s that girl we can relate to she’s finding herself. She is navigating her way through trying to find that balance of a good relationship, maintain her career, and still shows women you can speak up for yourself and demand respect too. Corbin can be found in the following television and film projects “The Blair Witch Project”, “Valor”, “How to Get Away with Murder”, “My Fiona”.
One character on the show who could not be completed is Ella’s publicist and manager, Barb. Played by Erika Alexander. This was a no brainer Erika is best known for being on “Living Single” she played lawyer, Maxine Shaw one of Khadijah’s best college friends and the occasional sometime roommate crashing her house and raiding her refrigerator, or bickering with Kyle. This seemed like the perfect match to add her in and she also is bringing the funny to show. She’s a good mentor for her protégé who is coming up as an author in the book and publishing realm. Erika can be seen in many projects she’s a seasoned actress who has a large plethora of roles in her background, “Living Single”, “The Cosby Show”, “Insecure”, “Wu-Tang: The American Saga”.
Tonya Pinkins also featured as a series regular has been featured as Gwen Greene she plays Whitney’s mother on the show and can be seen in “Aardvark”, “Above the Rim”, “Gotham”, and “Fear the Walking Dead”.
Now you know we cannot forget about a little man candy on the show meet Tosin Morohunfola who plays “Ola” Olabisi Adeyemo, Whitney’s loving, charming, fiancé on the show. Tosin can be seen in Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil’s “Love Is”, “The CHI”, “I’m sorry”, “Black Lightning”.
Steve Bishop he plays Professor Matthew Powell and is Sondi’s love interest he can be seen in “Girlfriends”, “Brothers & Sisters”, “The Game”, “Criminal Minds”, “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D”, “Greenleaf”, “Royal Pains”, and “Being Mary Jane”.
Next is Jay Walker who plays Jason and is Renee’s husband, soon to be ex on the television series. You can see Walker in “Coin Heist”, “Slight”, “Airport Security”, “Squad”, and “Pump”
Last but not least is Nick Sagar who plays Anderson, Ella’s in and out boyfriend and love interest on the show he has been featured in “Queen of the South”, “The Princess Switch”, “Il Manors”, Tyler Perry’s “The Haves and Have Nots”, and “Supergirl”.
I love what the embodiment of this show represents friendship, unity, sisterhood, family, and no matter what is happening at that stage of your life. You cannot get through it with the bonds of good loyal friends, and support. The show is stylish, fun, cool, and definitely one I see going places in the future. It’s oozing “Black Girl Magic”, positive images that we need to see on television. I think we need that from time to time to show the versatility in Black television today because minorities and humans in general are complex, we have so many layers to us individually.
